WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (I saw you from behind) WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (I like to waste yr time) WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (You fool me with a sign) AND WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN (I like to waste yr time) Give myself away if you can knead this Coarse palare for yr postal code Running out of ways to the keep the secret Here in the fishbowl Don't know what yr missing Neither do I Don't talk like this often Easy as sighs WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (I saw you from behind) WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (I like to waste yr time) WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (You fool me with a sign) AND WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN (I like to waste yr time) Settle up with the glass hounds Do you find that we're "roses to violets" Learn me those common nouns and simple predicates There's coral in little mounds Between the molars of pilots Too tender to spit them out On simple predicates WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (I saw you from behind) WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (I like to waste yr time) WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN (You fool me with a sign) AND WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN (I like to waste yr time)

about

songs written/recorded during the first wave of the QUARANTINE

song descriptions written by James

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN:
We played this song in Philadelphia. It didn't go great! The venue was still playing their house music during that part of our set, and we kind of forgot about the song for while. Seven months later, we turned it into a gd BOP!! Olivia Rohlfs on the backup vocals *chef's kiss emoji*

CHARLIE:
Justin came over to Smooch HQ 2 in August. He had written a melody for two guitars. We started playing it, and in a burst of thoughtless enthusiasm, we wrote this silly song. It's heavily influenced by our shared love of the Ke$ha song, "Stephen," and it rules.

MEN WITH WAGONS:
This is the first song I wrote in quarantine. A few weeks in, I was talking with my friend Max about how I hadn't been writing any songs, and he suggested taking notes of any phrases that seemed interesting. A few days later, I noted the phrase, "men with wagons," while I was working, ended up writing this during my lunch break. I sent it to the group, and Owen recorded the drums at his house. It really has no content, but it's got two bass lines!!!

DND! TONIGHT!:
I play Dungeons & Dragons. I wanted to write a theme song. I had an idea for the lyrics when I was driving on Rt. 206. That's it. Sick.

BONG SONG:
Jon recorded this bass line on his phone and sent it to the rest of the band. The file was called "Bong Song," because he had just purchased a new one. I added some programmed drums and chopped up audio from TV shows. It reminded of making beats for my friends in high school. It bumps.

AROUND PEOPLE:
This is actually a very serious song. But who cares about that?!!!?! It's an electronic jam now. The bridge goes stupid. Jamesy on the synths and auto-tuners, Flanny on the kit. Serious version will be on our 2nd album.

CROWDED MIND:
I took a day off from work in June and wrote this song that sounded too much like Alex G, very slow and country-ish, so I altered the groove and threw some distorted guitars on it. Then Owen and Jon recorded drums and bass. Now it's slow AND it rocks. I sent it to a friend, and she said it was "sad." Was she right? FIND OUT MF!!

MISS MY FRIENDS:
This has the distinction of being the only quarantine demo recorded at the legendary Smooch HQ 1, aka the Psychedelic Schoolhouse. Jon wrote this song last September, if I'm not mistaken. He and Justin recorded it in May. I added the tiniest of guitar solos in the middle. A tender song about missing your friends. RELATABLE STUFF!

SYNTH POP HAIRCUT:
When we released Haircut, we put on a livestream with a bunch of Friends of the Band, which was a lot of fun! BUT, we were all isolated. Jon and Justin lived together, so they played a set with each other. But I was all by my lonesome. And I didn't want to rock, man!! I wanted to freaking ~vibe~

about

Smooch New Jersey

"it has been a quiet quarantine for Smooch," says Benny Profane, the group's mysterious new manager, who looks like an old dish rag, and smells the same, "and yet, these boys were making noise the whole time."

At this point, in our discussion, Profane reaches into the pocket of his suspiciously pristine Letterman's jacket - (Mr. Profane would neither confirm nor deny reports that he stole it)...
